Resident Engineer
The Instrumentation and Control System Resident Engineer will provide regular in-person oversight and support for the Instrumentation and Controls (I&C)/ Ops Training Simulator supplier and will be based out of Idaho Falls, ID. The resident engineer will report to the Instrumentation and Controls/Electrical (I&CE) Senior Manger as part of the Natrium Plant Delivery department and will support and coordinate cross functional and multi-disciplinary design activities.
The amount of time spent in Idaho Falls offices and TerraPower’s Bellevue offices and travel in-between will be highly dependent on the successful candidate’s geographic location and availability to travel on a regular basis. The ideal candidate will be located in or relocate to Idaho Falls to allow continuous in-person support and collaboration between key I&C vendor(s) and TerraPower’s teams. Candidate would travel periodically to TerraPower’s Bellevue office to meet with Natrium managers and stakeholders.
The I&C Resident Engineer will coordinate scope, schedule, and technical integration for safety system, non-safety system, and simulator project coordination. They will also support cross functional collaboration with procurement, licensing, safety analysis, and PRA.
The Instrumentation and Control team is responsible for Natrium plant I&C design and oversight of key I&C development. I&C Resident Engineer will work with the plant design oversight teams to support communication, identify and work through roadblocks, and align design details, and project execution strategies.
The Resident Engineer will work as part of a high performing team of engineers.
Responsibilities
• Provides continuous vendor oversight of I&C design scope of work for the Natrium plant.
• Functions as a direct and immediate conduit of communication to facilitate continued progression of design activities.
• Travels to TerraPower’s Bellevue, WA office to meet with TerraPower Natrium managers and key stakeholders.
• Supports TerraPower’s plant design oversight team by facilitating good communication between TerraPower and partner stakeholders and managers.
• Supports TerraPower’s I&C vendor project management by resolving/clarifying scope and schedule issues and coordinating with the TerraPower plant design oversight team.
• Supports alignment between I&C vendor and TerraPower on technical issues, Natrium procedures, plant design strategies, and implementation of licensing strategy, including application of LMP to SSC classification.
• Oversight of a Natrium I&C Systems vendor including budgeting, staffing, planning, and monitoring design development progress
• Review I&C system design work documents covering design, integration, and implementation of software work products and other system design documents for Natrium nuclear demo plant.
• Identify critical high-risk areas and initiate proactive measures to prevent potential project delay.
• Provide weekly summary reports to senior management about critical task progress, potential delays, challenges, resource needs etc.
• Interface and management of subcontractors, vendors and partners providing direction and assimilating their work.
Key Qualifications and Skills
• Candidate should have a minimum of 15 years of design/project management experience working on large utility grade projects, preferably in the nuclear industry.
• A minimum of (5) years of proven leadership experience required.
• Simulator Development, I&C Engineering or Digital System V&V experience is desirable.
• Familiarity with I&C related industrial codes, standards and regulations, especially NRC DRG 2021, NEI 18-04, IEEE 603, IEEE 7-4.3.2, IEEE 1012 (2016), NUREG 0711.
• Experience coding/developing control system software or plant process computer software is desirable.
• Excellent writing and communication skills
• Ability to work independently to solve challenging problems and provide recommendations in a timely manner.
• The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trustworthiness and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.
• Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to clearly convey complex multi-disciplinary engineering and design issues and support resolution.
• Experience as a design engineer working in a nuclear quality (10 CFR 50, Appendix B) environment.
• Ability to travel frequently to vendor locations outside of Idaho to support in-person collaboration and oversight meetings
• Ability to occasionally travel to Bellevue, WA to meet with TerraPower managers and stakeholders.
• Familiarity with systems and requirements-based design.
• Experience with coordination and integration of nuclear plant design, including licensing, PRA, SSC classification, etc.
• Candidate should have broad based technical and engineering skills and experience leading an integrated cross functional design team.

Salary Range Level 13: $155,358 - $223,327
*Typically, our employee salaries are within .90 – 1.0 of the mid-point of the posted salary band. Any salary offered within the posted salary band is based on market data and commensurate with the selected individual’s qualifications and experience. This range is specific to Idaho State.
