Nuclear Island Fluid Systems Design Intern

 

TerraPower is seeking a highly motivated engineering intern with interest in power plant design and systems engineering. The Nuclear Island Fluid System (NIFS) Design Intern will work as part of the engineering team that oversees the design of the nuclear island fluid systems for the Natrium demonstration plant. The Natrium demonstration plant is a fourth-generation nuclear power plant that incorporates molten salt energy storage and is currently in design engineering to be built in Wyoming. 

 

The intern role will focus on an under-developed area of NIFS requirement management, and go through the whole process, as outlined in the Natrium Requirements Management Plan, of conducting gap analysis, eliciting requirements, performing reviews, and seeing them through the approval process.  The intern’s scope will include a minimum of four distinct systems and will develop multi-disciplinary engineering knowledge and an understanding of requirements management.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding of the Natrium plant nuclear island configuration and layout.
  • Gain an understanding of system interfaces and how they manifest in requirements.
  • Work with multiple teams and departments to assure consistency and correctness of system requirements.
  • Communicate clearly with peers located on-site and remotely.
  • Deliver an updated set of requirements for the Natrium nuclear island fluid systems.

 

Key Qualifications and Skills

  • Education: Currently enrolled in a graduate or starting senior year of undergraduate program in Mechanical, Chemical or Nuclear Engineering; graduate program preferred
  • Excellent understanding of the principles of thermal systems analysis. 
  • Understanding of mechanical system design and performance analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work on tasks and teams that require a multi-disciplinary approach.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently during a given work week.
  • Ability to work with minimum direction to solve challenging problems.
  • The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trustworthiness and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.

Hourly rate range**  

Undergraduate: $26.00 - $27.50

Post-grad including PhD: $32.00 - $48.00
