Director, Safety and Engineering Analysis, Natrium


The Natrium Safety and Engineering Analysis Director is responsible for leading a large multidisciplinary department of engineers performing methods development, design support analyses, core design, safety analyses, and probabilistic risk assessment for the Natrium project. This department’s work is central to developing and proving out the safety case for the Natrium Demonstration Reactor. The department director sets direction and priorities for department planning and execution and holds design authority for department technical work. They also serve as a key interface to other departments and external parties. The Director, Safety and Engineering Analysis, Natrium, reports to the SVP and Natrium Project Director. . 

The Director will work closely with Regulatory Affairs to ensure that the analysis is performed in accordance with licensing requirements and guidelines and supports licensing submittals such as the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report and Final Safety Analysis Report.  The Director will also be responsible for the department budget and schedule.  This position will work closely with other Natrium Engineering Directors to ensure that work on the project is fully integrated, and the analysis supports the design development. They will ensure testing by internal groups fully supports the verification and validation of the methods developed.  They will work closely with the Design Authority to ensure that design decisions are made at the appropriate level of the project, and that their team follows required procedures and processes.



  • Leadership, oversight, morale and accountability for of the Safety and Engineering Analysis Group, including Engineering Analysis, Safety Analysis and Risk, Core Design and Methods, and System Analysis.  
  • Support hiring, development, and retention of direct reports and of the broader team.
  • Support commercial development of the Natrium plants and services.
  • Responsible to the Project Manager for delivery of the Natrium Demonstration Reactor
  • Provide overall strategic direction and goals for their team
  • Interface with other department directors and managers on resource utilization, administrative and technical matters
  • Interface with outside agencies where required to support department activities
  • Ensure the department is adhering to corporate procedures/policies and department activities are compliant with federal and local regulations
  • Coordinate budgets and financial planning for the department
  • Coordinate with other internal organizations including HR, Finance, Procurement, Licensing and Legal to ensure department deliverables are met
  • Ensure compliance with engineering procedures and training
  • Develop compliant training program for department staff
  • Support licensing activities associated with the department
  • Coordinate and lead planning efforts and maintain schedule
  • Set technical direction and evaluate design changes within the department
  • Initiate independent reviews of department work and planning where needed


Key Qualifications and Skills

  • B.S. degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, Electrical, or other relevant engineering discipline from an accredited university.  
  • 15+ years direct experience in nuclear industry and 8+ years of supervisory experience
  • The Department Director should have exceptional leadership, communication, and project management skills, 10 years of management experience, and be committed to developing the skills and talents of others.
  • Experience in design and licensing of advanced nuclear reactors.
  • Experience in estimating engineering, fabrication and construction.
  • Strong understanding of the nuclear regulations, plant work control processes, operational design philosophies, and integrated plant operations during normal and off-normal events.
  • Experience working to quality standards on design activities, such as ASME NQA-1Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills, including periodic training development and presentation. 
  • Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence. 
  • Candidate must be a high potential, self-starter and possess ability to coordinate and lead a design or proposal team’s effort with minimal direction. 
  • Ability to handle projects that include many competing objectives and design constraints, with ability to resolve conflicts between objectives. 
  • Ability to work on tasks that require a multi-disciplinary approach. 
  • The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.

Salary Range Level: 14  $213,397 - $289,401

*Typically, our employee salaries are within .90 – 1.0 of the mid-point of the posted salary band.  Any salary offered within the posted salary band is based on market data and commensurate with the selected individual’s qualifications and experience.  This range is specific to Washington State.
