Business Manager, Design Authority

The Business Manager for Design Authority reports directly to the Design Authority Director and is responsible for helping to develop and maintaining the department's vision, organizing the day-to-day operations, identifying and filling gaps, and increasing the operational efficiency. The successful candidate will drive alignment across the department, develop and track department goals and objectives, and be the first level to solve critical problems across the department. 

The Business Manager will interface frequently with the Senior Managers and Project Account Engineers for alignment on schedule planning, cost planning and management, staffing planning and risk management. They will be responsible for coordinating and directing communications, developing, and making executive level presentations, coordinating team presentations, open-forums and roundtables. The Business Manager will coordinate directly with peer Business Managers, aligning processes and procedures along with lessons learned from each department. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Support Design Authority leadership in communicating key goals, priorities, definitions, goals and vision. 
    • Assists in the establishment of department goals and tracks them through completion using key performance indicators
    • Continually refines department vision with Design Authority leadership
    • Creates and maintains the departmental roadmap, and disseminates this information to the program leadership
    • Formalizes and establishes ownership across departmental groups by supporting Design Authority managers’ in planning for success in their areas
    • Working with Department Director, develops and executes strategy on how best to execute internal and external strategies to position the department as a central driver of project success.
    • Manages the department objectives, key results, and indicators.
    • Helps drives accountability for the team and organization in executing core business activities. Determines feasibility and prioritizes team activities when needed
  • Coordinate and direct communications, including development and delivery of executive level and team presentations 
    • Creates clarity in ambiguous situations to facilitate and drive prioritization and decision making for leaders across the organization. 
    • Supports Design Authority leaders in communicating key goals, priorities, and definitions and in change management activities   
  • Interface with department managers and peer Business Managers and Project Account Engineers to align schedule planning, cost planning and management, staffing planning and management, and risk management.  Coordinate and develop budget, schedule, and resource planning for the Design Authority department.  
    • Coordinates department short and long-term planning on a continuous basis with Project Planning Lead, Senior Managers, Control Account Managers and other project leaders
    • Coordinates the efforts of Control Account Managers and Project Coordinators within/across departments
    • Collaborates with project leadership to develop and execute planning processes as well as planning integration across the broader organization. 
    • Coordinates budget planning for corporate fiscal years and project business periods with Project Controls and Control Account Managers
    • Develop short and/or long-term forecasting plans built in collaboration with the leadership team.
    • Works closely with outside of DAP program leaders to develop schedules, budgets and to stay on track with project deliverables
    • Has authority for approval of department budget and staffing requests, including Purchase Requisitions, Purchase Orders, Invoices, cost code charges, travel requests, and other approvals according to company policy.
  • Monitor Hiring,Training, Department Structure
    • Optimizes team structure, team to team dynamics, and relationship building with key internal and external partners.
    • Collaborates with leaders regarding short and long term resource management planning and hiring strategies
    • Tracks the use of role-based compliance trainings and new trainings; drives the training completion rates.
  • Develop Process and drive Process Improvement & department Efficiency Through Metric Tracking. Develop and analyze department performance data, and track performance. 
    • Drives operational effectiveness by influencing critical internal stakeholders.
    • Identifies opportunities for increases in efficiency of project and corporate process, and leads process improvement initiatives
    • Assesses risks, identify problem areas in execution, and improves collaboration among interfacing teams
    • Coordinates with Business Managers in other departments to ensure department alignment
    • Develops and analyze department performance data with Project Analytics and Project Controls and assist in preparing status reports
    • Tracks and reports on key performance indicators for the department; may define measurement plans. Aligns priorities and staffing solutions with key performance indicators and performance metrics.
    • Leads corrective action identification, tracking and closure initiatives for the department, ensuring that CRs are prioritized, scheduled, if necessary and closed in a timely manner.

 

Key Qualifications and Skills

  • B.S. or higher in relevant a engineering discipline from an accredited university and 10+ years direct experience in an Engineering work environment; advanced degree or certification in business administration or project management preferred. 
  • 10+ years’ experience in project and program management; experience in the nuclear industry preferred. 
  • Experience with software development projects desired.
  • Ability to deliver projects that include many competing objectives and design constraints, with ability to resolve conflicts between objectives.
  • The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, able to communicate openly, and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.
  • On-site arrangement is preferred, but remote work will be considered based on candidate assessment.

Salary Range Level 12:  $ 163,702  - $ 226,844

Salary Range Level 13:  $ 187,088  - $ 268,939

*Typically, our employee salaries are within .90 – 1.0 of the mid-point of the posted salary band.  Any salary offered within the posted salary band is based on market data and commensurate with the selected individual’s qualifications and experience.  This range is specific to Washington State.
